The Official 2013 "FIGHTER" K.I.T.H. thread...

The KITH is on!
We have enough interest. Post in this thread if you would like to be included with a big IN! I will keep the list updated here.

Here are the rules.

Each maker will make a knife in the Category of "Fighter"
I want to deliberately keep the parameters loose so everyone can have fun and be creative. Just remember the one rule. It needs to say "FIGHTER" when you see it. It should scare me a little when it comes in the room. HAHA that does NOT mean it needs to be a foot long or more(but it could be), that will be up to each maker... Bigger knives are harder to make and take longer so keep that in mind. The knife should be a functioning, hardened, useable knife. Beyond that, steel is your choice, guard or no guard, your choice. Synthetic or natural Handle your choice. Etc. Just make a Fighter.

Sheath is optional unless everyone wants it to be required.

The finish date will be Last day of April. I think if it takes any longer people loose interest.

Normal KITH rules apply as to who gets what knife. Random drawing.

I copied the following text from the sticky to make sure everyone knows.
Quote:
Each maker completes a knife by the draw date, and then the host draws names from the 'hat' to determine who gets which blade. The most common method (in my own experience) is to draw the names and make a list. Each maker sends his knife to the maker whose name appears below his on the list. The guy on the bottom ships to the guy on top. Done. Right? Not quite...

A KITH as it was conveyed to me is a modern adaptation of an old practice where guys at a job site would gather at lunch on Friday and throw their pocket knife in a hat, draw one out and that was what they carried for the rest of the week. Around these parts, the KITH evolved from an IITH (Iron In The Hat), where projects were kept very simple (arrowheard for example) to encourage participation.

In the end, a KITH is about community. It represents a challenge to new makers to do their very best work because they are sending it to someone who knows knives as well or better than they do. An honest critique can be a blow to a sensitive ego, but worth so very much in the development of a maker. For the ol' masters, it represents a chance to share years of accumulated knowledge and wisdom. For all, it represents a sense of brotherhood, sharing, and belonging.
I think I will ask Ray if he will do The drawing on the Sunday night live chat, so it is live and impartial. Might be fun if we all tuned in to see what we end up with.

Those who are IN the KITH so far...

And the decisions begin, I'm anxious to get started, I currently have 1084 and 5160. I also have more thicknesses and widths of 1085 and a 2 inch wide piece of 1095 coming from Aldo's. I might wait and use the 1095 and see what kind of Hamon I can get. Or maybe I'll use 1/4 inch 5160 and put some forge marks into it...

This should be fun.

The activity you've been getting from 1084 has been pretty good. I would love to see what you could pull off with some 1095. I'm using O1 tool steel for mine because its all I've got that is thick enough right now. I have some thicker 1084 but the pieces are to short.

If it were me I would say no. (Just how I feel) I believe a knife made for a KITH should be made during the KITH and specifically for the KITH. That's just how I feel about it. Maybe Ricky has different views. Sorry mang.

I think I feel the same as Metal99. I think the knife should be made during and for the KITH. We would love to have you join in and make one along with us, and it's a good excuse to start a new project where we give our very best effort knowing before hand that someone else is going to be receiving it.

I have 2 knives right here on my desk that would fit the description, but I'm excited to make one specifically for the KITH. My biggest problem is deciding on which of the ideas swirling in my head do I pursue?

A Loveless Dixon style? Sorta dainty and dexterous?
or something Like a Claudio-Cas bash your brains in style? I love em both and both are on my want to try list.

My order from aldo still hadn't shipped so I used 1084. The blade is 9 inches.

Mine is around 6/34" long. I wanted to go bigger but.... Grinding a knife this size on a 1x42 is tricky enough.
