Andy,

It looks like I am going to have a bunch of Damascus left over. That is if everything goes right. Is the museum sure they do not want a knife for display?? I would be more than happy to forge a second blade. If not I will just send it all back to you. Not a problem either way.

I did ask. They said one only with all remaining metal to be returned. That was the only way they would let me have the material. I really wanted one for myself, but you know how it goes. Are you useing the base of the shell or is it still intact. (the round part)? If it is I will use it to make a display stand.

Not a problem. The base is still intact about 1/2" thick. Do not need it so it will be returned. It is a good thing we decided to go with Damascus, being and exploded shell it is full of cracks. The spring was pretty rusted too and came out looking a lot like wrought iron. It will weld up nice though and after a couple of folds all the imperfections will be long gone. What do you think on layer count?? 3 stacks will give me 2625 layers. Then do we want a random or ladder pattern. I like the idea of a tight ladder myself.

Sounds good to me. Glad its going to work. I was wondering about cracks that wouldn't show until you started to forge. Tight ladder would be awsome. Thanks for all your hard work.

And a couple more

Some rough forged and billet ready shell pieces.

Pieces ready for putting the billet ready. l-r Truck Spring, Artillery Shell, 15N20. The billet will have 21 layers in it and will be folded 3 times with 5 cuts each. That will give me a layer count of 2625. All of this will be done with the dry welding technique.

Hope you enjoy.

I can't count worth beans. There is 22 initial layers with 3 re-stacks in 5 sections that will get , 110, 550, 2750. Had to take my shoes off for that one. One more day of forging and i should have the billet ready for profile forge and patterning. It looks like it will be a tight ladder pattern. Lots of fun even in 108f weather.

You gotta love the man doing this in 100 plus degree heat. Thought I'd save Chuck the work and post these.
