*Purpose* What is a custom project and how do we use this forum?

Welcome to the Custom projects forum! Allow me to explain why this forum exists and what we hope to do here.

For many knifemakers, the exchange of ideas and feedback is a critical element in our developement. For others, a sense of community and fellowship is a very rewarding bonus after a hard day in the shop. Logging on to TKN and getting involved in a forum discussion is a great way to experience these things. Custom projects are just one way to go a step further. Here, we seek to enhance that sense of community by participating in a range of custom projects that makes TKN a 'hands on' experience.

If you are caught up on your customer orders and want to spread your creative wings a bit, you could post a thread asking for a partner in a trade project. Set the parameters or theme and someone will surely take you up on the challenge. This is a great way for a couple of newbies to exchange valuable feedback on their work and learn how other makers do things without feeling intimidated by a full blown project involving a dozen or more makers.

If you are interested in studying a particular style of knife that perhaps you have little experience with, or maybe just a style you really like, you could sponser a KITH (explained in a separate thread) where you invite other makers to interpret that style in a knife they make, and then everyone exchanges knives.

Maybe you want to particpate in a 'pass around' knife, where one or more knives makes the rounds from maker to maker with each one completing a different step in the construction process. This would be a great place to look for such a project!

These are just a few ideas. The possibilities are only limited by the imaginations of the TKN members. All a project requires to be 'custom project' is that it involve multiple makers and custom work relating to knives. This is pretty loose, so please don't feel restricted. All we ask is that everyone getting involved in a project post a photo of the completed work. A separate gallery thread will be set up as a sticky to highlight the completed peices each project produces.

This is also a great place to come browse the project galleries and just look at the work produced by makers of all experience levels.

Please understand that these projects may be conceived in other forums and simply 'born' here as formal projects. Some may even be moved here from other forums for a variety of reasons to include ease of navigation. Others still may never make it here. We simply wish to provide the Custom Projects forum as perhaps the first place to look if this kind of activity and discussion interests you.

Feel free to offer suggestions as this forum develops and finds its place here on TKN.

Above all, Have fun with it!
