Cheap rotary tables
Hi all,
I'm considering entering the slipjoint folder fray, and like the idea of rebating the liners around the pivot hole. I own a small, but accurate benchtop mill, and was thinking of purchasing a cheap 3" or 4" rotary table for this purpose. Has anyone got any experience with the sub-$200 rotary tables I'm seeing on ebay? I'll be the first to admit that I despise buying garbage tools, but as I'm just dipping my toes in the water, I'm wondering what the experience of others has shown with these contraptions. Adequate? Avoid at all costs? Thanks in advance! Matt __________________ Matt Gregory |

Matt, there is a 6" phase II and an 8" Enco on ebay that are much better.
Note: Most of the cheap rotary tables aren't meant to mill in the rotary axis and don't do it very well. They are meant to rotate your work, lock the table down and mill a straight line. John |

Alas, I was afraid someone would say that...
Nothing's ever cheap, or easy. Thanks for the input! __________________ Matt Gregory |

Hey Matt, I just had another thought. A couple of years ago I bought a right angle gearbox at a junkyard for $20.00 I didn't have a use for it at the time, but eventually turned it into an indexing table with 1/10 degree increments. I think you could do the same thing and turn a right angle gearbox into a rotary table for milling. I saw a motorized gearbox on ebay for $59.00.
I'll go take a picture of my arrangement and email it to you if you need it. Hope this helps. John |

Sorry for the late reply - thanks for the offer, John, but I'm going to see if I can come up with another means.
