Stag Horn Bowie

Here is a large bowie I just finished. 11 1/2 inches total, 8 inch blade. It's forged from 5160, differentially heat treated, with brass and copper accents. I embedded an old Canadian copper penny in the pommel, and made the same for the sheath. I got the antler from a local hunter. The curve in it feels surprisingly good in the hand. Hope you like it.

Nice work. How did you attach the penny in the pommel? How is the brass pommel attached to the horn? Keep up the good work...

kvistads,
I took a square of brass and drilled a hole in the center, almost all the way through, the same size as the nut which is threaded onto the back of the tang. I rounded the nut off to just fit into the hole and brazed it into the hole. This allowed me to insert a bolt and use it as a center to mount it in the lathe. I turned the square round, and cut in the depression for the penny. I soldered the penny in place, then fastened the pommel to the horn. I filed the horn to match the pommel, then sanded and polished. Since the antler is curved, I had to put a hinge into the tang to follow the curve. A trick I learned from J. Neilson. Really neat!
