" The Beginning" Part 1
"A canvas covered cabin, in a crowded labor camp, stands out in these memories I revive", this
line from Merle Haggard's "Hungry Eyes" is as good a place to start as I can think of,There are no good memories from my childhood, a time that is supposed to be filled with fun..All I remember is moving all the time and working in the fields in California. Picking cotton, peaches,oranges, cutting grapes, cauliflower- after the fields were empty, it was time to move on.We were a migrant family, my mom and dad,my sister and older brother and me all contributed to make a living.As a result, my education wasn't what it could have been. My sister told me later that we attended 13 schools in one year.I was small for my age, so quite often the bully at a new school would single me out for a beating.I learned fast that I had to get in the first lick,'cause that would prob be the only one I got.It was great to see the look of shock on a bully's face when he saw his own blood... __________________ I once complained about having no shoes, until I met a man who had no...guitar |
