Finish Problem

[
Being a beginning level in the knifemaking and leatherworking hobbies.

With the gift from the daughter and family of a GI3 kit for Xmas. I made a sheath. I used
Eco-flo Bison Brown for the initials straight from the bottle, which I have now learned it shoud be diluted for the first coat. I then put on two coats, a hour between, of Super Sheen.

It is worn under a shirt of jacket and some of the finish has started to wear. Is there any way to fix this problem?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

LeeRoy

The fix may be more trouble with the lack of guaranteed positive results than you want to gamble on.

Deglazer #12 by Feibing is available at Tandy/Leather Factory. I would recommend applying it with several consecutive Q tips so you can control the application. Remove all of the old finish including part of the dye. Let it dry well and then start again from the beginning. Dyeing letters, I generally use a "Sharpie" felt tip pen and I keep many in different colors on my bench for this purpose. Do the dye job over again and let it dry completely. Then I use TanKote as a pre finish applied with light strokes so as to not cause the dye to come off or streak. When that is dry I use NeatLac or some other compatible final finish.

On your next project requiring dyeing letters, remember the Sharpie trick. It works great.

Paul

sheathmaker

Thanks for the reply.

I will thank about reduing my sheath, maybe it would be easier just to make another one.

I will start getting some sharpies and try it that way.

paul do you use the sharpies to mark out somehow before dyeing or you use them as the dye.
i was making a scrap peice for carving practice and used a sharpie just to see what it would look like if it was finished but i didnt think i could actually use it on a real sheath. theyre great because you can get the reallly fine tips on them.

The Sharpies come in washable and permanent inks. Get the permanent ink style for leather work. As Paul says, they're great!
