jON WELDER'S POST - MOVED

"Rocky mountain Leather trade show" --???? anybody going?
Wow What a great bunch of sheaths! Are any of you sheath makers going to the Rocky mountain trade show? Or have you gone in years past? I'm still on the fence and haven't committed yet. I'm sure it would be a good place to learn some new things and see some really cool leather work. This show is put on by the "Leather crafters and Saddlers Journal" they advertise in "Blade magazine"... Any one attended before? ---jon

Howdy Jon-
As much as I would like to or have liked to visit those shows I don't travel so well anymore and won't be there.
In my estimation from past reports from those who have attended there isn't much in the way of sheaths, but still lots of AMAZING leather work - much by the masters in the field and IMO that would be worth the trip and would definitely broaden one's horizon's as to what the wonderful world of leather work encompasses!

WOW!!

Geeze I love this place! Every time I start feeling I've got a handle on things I come here and the bar has been raised again, from the fine knife BT started the thread with to all the great leather. This is the kind of stuff that keeps me motivated.

I'm still amazed that there are knives shipped without sheaths, especially higher end stuff. I would rather do my own work so every thing is my fault good or bad. But, with the quality of work that can be obtained for a reasonable price by one the many leather crafters out there it almost seems negligent not to include one with the knife.

I feel it is far worse to throw a knife into a generic or ill fitting sheath. It just smacks of a give a s##t attitude about customer satisfaction.

I can't think of alot to add to the sheath design discussion. I do agree that it can be alot more complex doing the sheath design than the knife design. Even when I know what type of carry I'm going to set the sheath up for I find myself sketching out several different designs and reworking those getting the design to fit the knife "just right". I know I'm fairly inexperienced overall but I'm finding alot of sheath design is subtle and difficult to explain.

Buddy,
I can appreciate the dilemma you're going through because I face the same situation with a current project.
With the "eye candy" that Chuck and Coop threw out there...the options available are truly mind-boggling!
Although my preferences lean towards more traditional or conservative styles, I allow the chosen artisan
to make the final interpretation.
All I really care about is that the caliber of work is complimentary and on par with everything else.

One thing you may consider, is whether or not you want to keep the knife sheathed or perhaps
display the pieces separately.
With the latter choice, possibly a nicely fitted display case would create a special focus on the whole package.
...Just a thought...

Tim

I sure would like to, but I'm trying to get ready for the Blade Show. There is a show later this year in Rome, GA, I'm going to try and make that one.

A.T.

P.S. Sandy, are you going to the Rome show?

Leather show in Rome, GA
A.T., my friend----see if you can get more info on that show if you can. Already you have me half talked into going. A few months ago I attended the annual meeting of the International Leathercrafters Guilds in Macon, GA. and it was a real eye opener! I was the guest of a beautiful lady,Karla Van Horne, the winner of the 1989 Al Stohlman award for excellence in leather craft. This is a most prestigious award as it is international in scope. Rome is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from my home--- ---Sandy---

This is the big one of the year. It's bad timing for me. But there is (from what I've read) a fairly good sized one each year in Rome, GA.

When The Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal post information on the Rome show, I'll post the info here.

A.T.

WOW! What a fantastic response and I'm pleased to see the level of interest and the very high level of creative and technical thinking present and I hope lots of folks will benefit, as I have, from what's been said so far.

When things settle down after the BLADE Show and the transition into summer season I plan to get down to business and work through the many great possibilities suggested here for containing and carrying the knife I showed at the top of this thread.

Ultimately, I will post pictures of the 'results' so we can continue to learn from this exercise.

Thanks to Chuck for encouraging me to participate as a collector in the Sheath Making Forum and to everyone who has joined in. I'm sure this thread will attract many looks over time from folks who have been scratchin' their heads like I was concerning the issue of integrating sheath design and knife style.

So should I make this a "sticky" so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle? I vote yes but do we have a consensus?

Count me in Chuck. It'll be fun to watch this saga unfold, and to see that beautiful knife mated up with a great sheath!

Chuck -- you got my vote for 'stickifying' it -- I think it's great that the subject of design integration has received so much attention

Good idea Chuck!

It'd be nice to pick up this thread again when the dust settles after the forum transition.
