How to dye light colors?
Hello,
Can anyone offer any advice as to the best way to apply spirit-based dyes in lighter colors (i.e. - tan and medium brown)? I am using Fiebing's Leather Dye. Here is the problem: when I use the wool dauber that comes with the dye, the dauber really loads up and as a result, the leather absorbs too much dye. What should have been tan ends up a very dark chocolate brown. (I have heard that some folks on the forum dip-dye their sheaths, and I have to assume that this method results in an even darker color!) At present, when I want to apply a tan or medium brown finish, I use a scrap of cotton fabric, and then apply 4-5 very light coats until the desired shade is achieved. However, this method does not work well when dyeing a stamped or carved sheath, because the indentions do not get filled with dye. I have to go back and use a fine paintbrush to try to get the color in the carved areas. I am beginning to suspect that there may be an easier way, and if so, I would greatly appreciate it if someone could clue me in. Regards, -Alex |
