All about a claymore

I am making a 51" long claymore (ground down from stock)... i want some advice on how thick and how wide ? Im thinking about 3/16" or 5/16 and 3" 3/4" wide.

If you know a good industrial steel grade for this project please let me know.

First of all, welcome to the CKD. Second, sorry you're not getting answers to your question but I doubt many of us have the correct experience to really answer that question well.

Most sword makers forge their blades, especially large blades. There's no reason you can't do it by stock removal but it doesn't seem that many of us have.

As for the steel, any good carbon tool steel would give good results if properly heat treated. The most common would probably be 1084, 1095, O1, A2, 5160 and so on.

It seems to me that 5/16ths stock might be preferable on a sword that size but you would want to use a lot of taper in the grind so that the blade would only be that thick near the guard. But, if you are asking from an historical perspective what the correct thickness might be I doubt many of us would know.

Anyway, I wanted you to have some kind of answer but, unfortunately, what I have offered is mostly just opinion ....
