Polish and etch?

HEY guys....so I got things almost ready to fit up on this knife. so I am wondering about the etch there is a hammon on it I etched quick after HT to check. so in trying to keep this knife as traditional Japanese as possible I am going to do a convex grind right down to the edge, no secondary bevel. looking at the katana's I have (well the good ones anyway) the blade is shiny but the hammon is still there so I am trying to figure out how to get that look would I have to polish all the way up to a mirror polish before etching? if not how far and I figure there is some sort of hand polishing or buffing after the etch any one know how this would be done. I have only done one hammon before this and the look I was going for was kinda the opposite more of a flat look rather than shiny. any tips/ advice of the polishing and etching would really be appreciated thanks guys
