First bowie

Hello all,

Been working a project on the side. I had got in some nice mesquite burl in and being the good Texas boy he is a friend asked if I could make a bowie for him out of it. I used Bruce Evans instructions to make it. It turned out pretty big, more of a miniature sword but so far the future owner seems happy. On it's way in the mail and should be there tomorrow -

A close-up of the filework and guard joint -

A lot of learning in this project. Not too happy with the hilt proportions, filework could have been a bit tighter and the pommel nut needs a lot more work

Jim

Well Jim, a darned good effort there. That certainly is a Bowie looking clip on the front end of this bad boy but I have to say the handle style and the double grind on the blade are screaming 'dagger!" at me - I reground the tip for you to illustrate what I see. But, whatever you call it, I wouldn't want to meet it in a dark alley ....

Thanks. Bruce site calls it a saber grind. The top edge is false.

I realized I forgot the specs. The blade is 440C HT by Bos Heat treating. OAL is 18" by 2" wide. Fittings are NS. Handle is the above mentioned mesquite burl scales.

I believe his plans are to use it for hog hunting. I asked my local hog hunters and they said this was perfect for the cu de grace.

I agree with Ray, it looks like a dagger type handle. It looks good though. And you are real close to me. Hello neighbor.

Great looking knife, but I see it pretty much the way Ray does....screams dagger. Little too much up sweep at the tip for a "sticker" for my taste. Needs to go in quick and easy. If it's just for "throating", should do just fine but a mighty pretty blade for that.

That looks like very nice work, but the design aesthetics could use some work in my opinion. The width steps down too harshly from the blade to the bolster/handle, the tip is a little odd, and the dagger style grind is a little unorthodox. I certainly wouldn't be ashamed of it though. The workmanship appears to be very nice. I just think maybe your design needs a little tweaking. Excellent work though, and what's really important is what the user thinks of it and how well it performs.

So passing score on execution but fail on design.

Hope the owner likes it

I wouldn't use the word fail. It is a matter of taste in the end. The trick, unless it is made for a particular person of course, is coming up with designs that appeal to the majority of people while still being effective. I'm no expert either.
