someone to heat treat small numbers of knives?

I'd like to heat treat a couple RWL34 blades,

I would use Paul Bos, but until i have 20 or so knives, its not worth the price.

how about texas knife?

anyone else?

thanks

Try contacting Roger Linger...he just lives up the street in West Virginia...has an oven and a Rockwell tester and is pretty meticulous in heat treating stuff as I understand. He's a maker, not a professional heat treater, but from my conversations with him, he seems to be a pretty up and up guy. Here's his email address:

I have used TKS for my few stainless knives. The service and results were great.Dave

The fact is I have recently heavily considered doing more of it for other makers. I love the HT probably over all other single aspects of knife making. I can not of course do it for nothing for obvious reasons that include time, cost of LN and etc.. There is no presumption on my part that I can out do a master such as Paul, who by the way has been there for my questions about heat treating. However, if in relatively small quantity and there is a need for expediency because of time of turning out the required amount to reach the minimum reqiured for Pauls's fantastic price I am willing. FOR MAKERS OTHER THAN MYSELF, I prefer doing stainless.

Yes Chris, I may be asking for too much to chew. It takes me two full days to heat treat a blade with the stress relief, slow ramp to pre-heat, snap temper, 12+ hours in deep cryo and two 2 hour tempers, and all other details involved.

P.S., to all here : I am not a regular at CKD. I found BF when I first got interested in knife making and have been dedicated to that site ever since. I spend almost all my time on 'shop talk' at BF. I like CKD, of course, but am not yet that familiar with CKD. I trust I can be forgiven and understood for that

RL

Welcome to the forums Roger. You'll like it here. Based on the way you conduct yourself at BF you won't have any trouble at all making some good friends at CKD. Your gentlemanly and helpful nature will make you fit right in.

Basically we just have a forum dedicated to custom (non-factory) knives, with a friendly family oriented atmosphere. We have no wars with other forums, so there's no problem doing things like occasionally pointing to a thread on another forum.

You can feel free to post pics of your work in the Display Case at any time. You can also put up a knife or two for sale in the Makers Sales forum, free of charge.

Many of the guys will already know you from BF. Even though we tend to hang our hats here, almost all of us do visit the other forums. We love knives and hanging out with other knifemakers.

Hi Roger, I'm not Terry...I'm much better looking. JK! Anyway, Since this site is pretty much all dedicated to custom knifemaking, unlike many of the other sites out there, I just hit the view new posts button daily and read all of the forums here...you can pick up good information in every forum on this site!

Roger,
You can just about use the whole thing as a Shop Forum. Rather than congregating in a single forum, most of us hang out in all of them. We all help and take care of each other. As you get a feel for it, it will become natural and a pleasurable experience.

Darren,
Better looking? In your dreams. Just look at that good looking mug in my banner!

Yes, I am to blame for getting that collaboration hunter started. It is on its way to Dave Larsen now for tang tapering and beveling. The steel was forged by Nick Wheeler, really nice twist pattern of 1084 / 15N20.

I'll be back.
