experiment worked
Since I am new to knifemaking this may be "old hat" to you veterans but is a first for me. In the past I always used a torch to solder bolsters but desided to experiment today and soldered the bolsters while in the tempering oven with the second temper. I simply "tinned" the bolsters with 400 degree solder, clamped them to the blade and placed all in the oven for the normal two hours. I got the same success as what I do with a torch and eliminated the need for keeping the blade cool while torch soldering. Let me know if anyone else uses this method and if there are any drawbacks with it. Gary |

Nope, I've never done it, but it makes sense to me. My only fear would be loss of solder in the joint from the prolonged stay at the high temperature. Bottom line if it works and save time and $$ go for it! |
