Interesting information Doug. It's pretty neat hearing about all these cool uses for wood through the years. I read that steam ships used to have ironwood bearings for the propellers.

I am about 90% sure it is some sort of Rosewood like Cocobolo.
Cocobolo will have a spicy smell that will vary a bit. Ironwood will be sort of musty. Pretty wood though. |

I bought some cocobolo scales from a guy about six months ago and they are a lot different looking then the chunk of cocobolo I bought at the wood shop. This wood is almost in between the two and they all smell the same. It's going to make some nice knife handles I'm sure.

I am sure that it is cocobolo. look at the little pores/dots in the first pic. iron wood would not have those. I have used some myself that look almost exactaly like the stuff in your pictures. sand it a little bit and it should have a smell similar to cinimon, or kind of like big red gum.

It's cocobolo I'm positive on that now. Good score for ten bucks lol.
