One hand assisted opening folder
I'm looking for a folder design which is one hand opening possibly assisted opening. I have larger hands and I cannot manipulate most folders designed to be 1 hand opening. The little stud on the blade is difficult for me to actuate and I end up cutting my thumbs as I actuate the blade open. I have a Kershaw which has a stub sticking out of the back of the knife and it works well with its assisted opening feature but the knife feels too small, its approx 4" long. I have an old schrade hunting knife which fits my hand well but its strictly a belt knife due to its size and I can thumb the blade open. I don't think the answer is just a bigger knife. I'm looking for a better 1 hand open design/mechanism for larger hands. Thanks

Try a DDR3.

Yep, the DDR3 from Knifekits.com. Maybe add a spring to help you open it, you know, quickly. Or one of the CUDA ROBO-assisted knives from Camillus. Or one of his assisted-opening custom knives. Lots more choices than there used to be.

Better yet, buy one of mine. I make assisted opening button locks and ambidextrous opening folders that use a thumb disk instead of a thumb bob.
I have both available, or I'll build whatever suits you. Click on my web site below. |

I'm a huge fan of Darrel Ralph's designs, but I've also seen Don Robinson's knives in person, and I'll vouch for what he submitted to this thread. He showed me a folder in Austin that had everyone drooling.

Don Robinson's assisted opener is real nice.
Do you have problems with the knife slipping out of your hand, or your thumb slipping off the thumb stud? I don't have really big hands, but they are a little larger. I've been frustrated by many of the new designs that place the thumb stud so close to the handle that you can't use it. I can easily see cutting yourself with one of those...they are usually real slippery and thin too. ~Brian |

Jaegar,
Yes, all of the above problems. I think thumbstuds are useless for the purpose of opening 1 handed. Anything big enough and in the right spot will interefere with the blade cutting thru something. |
