Question on welding chain

When you are welding the motorcycle chain I don't get how you have placed the steel bar you are using to hold the chain in the forge. Is it only on one side, or is there chain on both sides? Is it only welded onto the end and then cut off after the chain is welded? Or does it run the whole length of the chain billet?

I have a piece of primary chain from a Harley Davidson. And the folks at the dealer are willing to give me more. But I haven't tried this yet and I have had the chain for a while now.

Scott,

It's just on one side of the bar, and I weld it at the top (and sometimes and the bottom too) and after the chain is welded, I cut that (those) part(s).

I find motorcycle chain very interesting to work with, I'm sure you'll find a use for it.
