Texas wind dagger attempt
Hi gang!
I'm slooooowly doing the final grind on a dagger I started at our buddy Bruce Bump's place last year. This is my first attempt for a dagger. That pattern has to be one of my favorites. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Dana Last edited by Dana Hackney; 01-03-2013 at 05:14 PM. |

I'd like to see that finished Dana. Great pattern and the grinds look pretty good to me too.

Thanks John, Bing and Mike. I plan on squaring the pattern in the wood so that it's 90 deg to the axis of the blade. That should help things to flow better.
I'm slow so it may be a bit before it's complete but I'll be sure to post pics as I go. I'm not near as prolific as you young guys . Thanks again, Dana |

Great looking forging and grind to match up with what's going on. Kind of looks like a Blackwood or Ivory kind of blade to me, but that opinion aint even worth two cents.
Thanks for showing it Dana, will watch for updates, Craig |

Hi Craig,
I was thinking of ivory but did not want to spend the $$$$ on a nice piece,as this is just a speculation knife. I do have a nice, very dark, block of black wood though.....hmmmmm Thanks for the compliments, Craig, Dana |

That's looking good, Dana. Dagger grinds are a challenge and you look to have this one going your way. I would agree with the choise of using a handle material that wasn't too busy. Something plain & elegant will set off the pattern in the blade. If you have enough of the blade steel left then a matching pommel might be a nice touch.
Let us know how this one turns out. Gary __________________ Gary ABS,CKCA, ABKA,KGA |

Thanks Gary! I'll take Craiig and you're suggestion and go for some black wood for the handle. I might have a little piece of that pattern left for at least a butt cap/nut but will have to look for some other material for the guard and spacer.
Now I gotta go order some belts for finishing (Norax U254) , as well as some of SuperGrit's rhino wet sheets . Thanks Gary, Dana |

Thanks Ed! I might just ship it and save on the baggage fee. I won't be doing much on it until I replenish my finishing belts anyhow. I'll check with Delta air first, though. It may be, since theses are small planes that every bag has to be checked anyway

That is gonna be very nice Dana, like the others I'm looking forward to the finished piece! My first or even second attempt didn't turn out anywhere near that good...

Thanks for the compliment Doug! I was very careful to grind at the slowest pace I could. I'm still digging around in my wood stash for the one nice piece of blackwood I had but haven't come across it yet .....
Take care Doug, Dana |
