Solid Brass Tacks

I've got a line on being able to order authentic 1/4" head solid brass tacks - shanks and heads not just the common brass head/steel shank - like were used in the 19th Century - the only bugaboo is I have to order them 10,000 at a time so......

Anyway if anybody is interested in going in on a case the cost would be at my cost of $5.00 a hundred plus S/H - that price is only a buck more than the brasshead/steel shank ones.

I can also get them with 3/8" heads for $5.25 a hundred, but I can order these 1,000 at a time.

How long are the shanks Chuck? And what's the reason for solid brass over the steel shank ones? Is it as obvious as I figure, corrosion resistance? If I had a use for some I'd order some myself. Heck, I might order some anyway just to have them. I can always use a few to keep my hat on in high wind! If I decide to get some I'll work it out with you when I send you the pitch. Here's an idea for you. Dip the shank in hot pitch before you drive it in. It should act as a lubricant and an adhesive all in one step.

Well I have counted up the orders as of this morning and I need to sell 1500 more of the 1/4" in order to place the order.
The 3/8" are on the way as of now and I should get them by the middle of the week by then we should hopefully have the rest of the 1/4"ers sold.

When we get enough to be able to order the 1/4" I will notify you all of the total due including S/H and once the moeny is in hand will get them shipped off.

Oldman What size do you want 1/4" or 3/8"?

Also to answer yours and Max's questions:

Shanks - 1/2"

Why - they are PC (period correct for pre 1860 or so), they don't rust, and most important you do not have to anneal the shanks when using them to make tack sheaths or belts.

Which brings us to how to on the back of sheaths, etc - clip them almost flush with the back side - I use a pair of end nippers that have bee ground flat on the face - then peen them by laying them head down on a piece of thin leather laid on a hard surface and tap them with a smooth face steel hammer - you can also use a large nail set but I find that slow and the original pieces I've seen were just hammered.

Max that dipping in hot pitch trick is what I use when putting them in bone or antler - predrill your holes, clip to length and then work fast to get them in.

PS. I know these are hard to find. Even in the late 60's Dixie Gun works was selling hard to find, genuine, "brass tacks" for work with powder horns and such that were just brass plated carpet steel tacks.

Richard - the solid brass head ones with a steel shank are easy to find these days - most muzzleloading and Indian supply companies carry them - but none of them that I know of have the solid brass head and shank.
The only other place I've found that does have them is a trunk shop and they get $40.00 a HUNDRED!
