Damascus blade pattern why not visible on edges
HI,
I am new to this forum, and to damascus blades also. I just want to ask a few questions, because I have seen a Boker Leopard Damascus I IRL today http://www.boker.de/us/pocket-knife/...110084DAM.html , and it was weird that the pattern of the blade does not "continue" on the edge. Why is that? Is it because the 1 mm of the edge "goes through" all the 300 layers, so I cannot possibly see them all distinctly? Also, at the back of the tang, where the blade folds, the pattern is also visible, but where there is a distinct "cut", like the blade had some "handle" for forging, and later has been cut off, where the metal seems unfinished because of the cut, there is absolutely no pattern, but above that, 2 mm from there, and FROM THE SAME ANGLE, the pattern is very visible. (I can send you a photo if you'd like). I really cannot understand this. Is this blade really 300 layers or is it just some finish on it? Thanks! |

It's the etch that shows off the pattern. Ground or sharpened steel is pretty much the same color. That's ok.
