I'll throw another one out for discussion. What size leather do you use for your sheaths? I use 7-8 oz for large,5-7 oz for small and medium fixed blades, and 3-5 oz for folders. How about you guys?Dave |

Gotcha, Dave---I'll bet you were referring to thickness or weights rather than size! And I couldn't agree with you more----- Sandy |

I use 2-3 oz. leather for my standard (small) sheaths, but since I line each one with goat or pig skin, the net effect is more like 4-5 oz. |

10-11 for most hunting size knives, with 13-14 for some of the large camp sized blades. |

I`m with william on this one, I use 10 to 11 on most knives but the large bowies get 13 or better! |

Ron's sheaths really stand up to abuse. I have one from him and my 6 month old minature Dauschund found it a few days ago. She spent hours chewing on it like it was a rawhide strip. Other than some rounding and damage at the belt loop it looks just fine. Now that's a real torture test |

10-12 for most knives. I also find that these measurements vary tremendously between suppliers, 8-9 from one will equal 10-12 from another etc. |

Re: weight& thickness
I know there is a hand held instrument that measures the weight of the leather. Does anyone know where I can get one? Mike |

Re: weight& thickness
Weight of leather relates to thickness. 1 ounce leather is 1/64 of an inch. 2 ounce is 2/64 and so on. Leather is also measured in irons. ghostdog |
