Leather sheaths with metal tips and throats, etc.

Does anyone know someone who can replicate the kind of sheaths that were common for the English made American bowie? Also, these knives frequently had castings for the guard and pommels. Do you know anyone who is currently doing this?

Pete, you might want to check out Bruce Evan's web site, he makes a lot of classic bowies, includeing some with shell pommels

He also has tutorials on makeing classic gaurds and but caps.

The way I understand it, most of the old Sheffield bowies guards and pommels were thin nickel silver that was hammered with punches and chisels on the back side and filled with pine pitch as a filler. Most modern bowie hard ware is cast or carved from solid material.

Hope this helps,

William

metal tips & throats

Don't know where you are located but John House of Woodbury, KY does a lot of these sheaths. He is a brother to Herschel & Frank the rifle builders. I did a few of that type sheath several years ago. Let me know if you need to contact John & i'll get you in touch.

Pete, Bruce Evans is working on a tutorial for just this type of sheath, it is not done yet, to my knowledge.

I would like to get into contact with John House. I'm not a knife maker, but I have several reproduction 19th century-style bowies that I'd like to have period sheaths made for. I'd like to see some of his work. Thanks.
