New Forge-Update (pics)
Had a nice visit with Brian Goode this morning. We did some testing on my forge. He suppplied some leaf spring to heat up.
There has been some question about operating sidearm burners at low presure i.e. 4 psi. We ran the forge at 4 psi as can be seen in the pics. I have no definitive answer as to why mine will work at this pressure, but it does. One of the ideas we kicked around was backpressure in the forge. My forge was designed with minimal backpressure in mind. I left 1/2" to 3/4" space around the movable back wall in addition to the pass through opening. I also spent a good deal of time tuning the burners prior to mounting. I did the tuning at night to see the flame better. I varried both the insertion depth of the Tweeco tip and the flare placement. This is a 3"x12"x5/16 piece of leaf spring. Pressure gage-forge running. Forge at 2 min. Leaf spring at 6 min-nonmagnetic Forge interior at 9 min. Thanks for looking. Mike |

I have a similar yet simpler forge which I found on ebay. It runs at 3-4 psi and heats well.
It does, however, have a 'fluttering' problem in the forward (top mounted) burner. I try it with the valve wide open or nearly closed and get about the same response. I currently only use it for annealing and HT of file steel blades, but I would like it run right. Any ideas? Andy,
I would think the burner needs to be aligned and tuned. Try removing the burner and check that everything is centered i.e. injector orifice, flare tip. Also check the opening through the insulation for obstructions. You can find some good tips at this site. http://www.frontiernet.net/~gnreil/design1.shtml Mike |
