Bill of materials
I'll build two folders, one with integral milled liner/bolsters, the other with spot welded bolsters to the liners.
Bill of materials: 1. spot welded bolster/liners. .045-.060 thick sheet stainless: 303, 304, 410, etc. for liners. Bolsters-303 or 416 SS 3/32x1/8" thick by 3/4" to 1" wide. Pins-Must match whatever bolster material you use exactly in order to be hidden when finished. 3/32" dia. SS rod to match bolster material. The scale pins can be whatever you wish. 1/6" to 1/8" dia. 2. Integral liner/bolsters. I suggest 416 SS 1/8" x 1" wide 416SS. Pins must match the bolster/liner material exactly. 3/32" dia. rod. As above, the scale pins can be made of whatever you want. Note: If you order your materials I suggest 416 SS because it is malleable which makes it easier to peen the pins. 3. Blade material: 3/32" thick x at least 3/4" wide x at least 4" long for each blade. I'll make two blades back to back out of the same piece of material, CPM154. 4. Back spring material: Same as blade material, at least 4" long. Last edited by Don Robinson; 04-27-2009 at 08:13 AM. |

Tooling Aid #1
You'll need to build this little aid while you wait for us to get started. It will be used to line up the bolsters on each liner before spot welding or silver soldering.
It doesn't need to be made of aluminum. Use whatever you have on hand. Saw a slot about 1" deep down one end wide enough to admit both liners at the same time. Drill and tap for a holding screw thru one side. Last edited by Don Robinson; 04-26-2009 at 06:10 PM. |

Rise and fall fixture
This is another extremely useful fixture I made that allows me to set the backspring rise and fall so that the spring returns to the same level position with the back of the knife handle in all positions, open, closed, half stop.
This isn't necessary to make these folders. It simply makes the job faster and more accurate. I'll demonstrate doing this in another way. Bill Vining, here on this forum, is offering these for sale. An experienced machinist should be able to make one for himself from the photos. |

Need more participants
We only have 4 people interested so far, and only two of you have ordered the plans.
If you intend to participate don't wait any longer to order plans. It will take several days for them to arrive in the mail. The U.S. Post Office thinks Brownsville, Texas is part of Mexico. The mail takes forever to arrive or leave. You also need to check your materials inventory and get any supplies you need before we start. So let's get some more people signed up and ready. How about you, Rebglass? |

Hi Don,
Spare time has been a little scarce lately, but if you need an extra participant, go ahead and count me in. I'll give it the best go that I can. Take care, Craig |

Victor, thanks for adding the link to Bill Vining's site.
Those of you who are really interested in making slipjoints will be far ahead if you buy or build a rise and fall fixture. It can be used to build any size or style slipjoint, and really shines when you use it to make mult-blade slipjoints. If you have access to a vertical milling machine, don't be afraid to make one. It's easy to make and you'll understand its use if you read Bill's on line instruction manual. Last edited by Don Robinson; 04-27-2009 at 08:28 AM. |
