I just tooled up my entire shop (sold some treasured goodies to bankroll this feat), but I have yet to purchase a primary grinder. I have a 1x30 combo rig--couldn't get a feel for it. I wound up doing my two knives (rough ground only at this point) with the medium wheel on the 6" bench grinder and a dremel (for the finger grooves, etc).
I have heard good things about the JET Multitool which replaces one of the wheels on a bench grinding unit. It is a 2x42 with an 8" serated rubber contact wheel, platen and full vertical to horizontal movement. You can buy it with an 8" JET grinder or just as an atachment. The atachment is about $319. The unit with a 3" contact wheel is $219.
I'm thinking that this may be a perfect setup on my 6" variable speed Delta grinder. Anyone used one of these things? Know someone who has? I want to make the order on Monday so get back with me if you think it's junk.
You can see it at www.trugrit.com

my 4x36 turned out great after a few modifications i was able to grind out the kitchen knife i was talking about it less time then it used to take me to do a little folder blade (with my file) i still used the file for some spots (i like the control). for the money ($99) you cant beat it, but like i said it will take some modifications.

with the model i bought doing any kind of flat grind was impossible the sides of the "platen" went beyong the belt so all i had to do was take a cutting wheel to either side of the belt a cut away sections so i could get nice clean plunge cuts. just be careful or youll cut away at the braces and the tracking.

Andy,

Use the Search key to check out some fairly hotly discussed topics concerning the MultiTool. If you have variable speed you'll be better off that most. Most people say it is incredibly noisy.

For my part, I'd put that $219 towards a Grizzly G1015 which sells for $355. Then you'll have a real grinder, with real power, that uses all the same belts that other knife makers will tell you you're going to need as you progress. Think about it....very carefully....

Thanks Ray.

After reading all the dirt on the multitool, I'm thinking that belt availabilty will be a serious problem.

What is the contact wheel size on the Griz 1015? How much to convert to variable speed?
