I wouldn't think it would cause any problems, a long as the elements arent damaged. Refractory cement should be fine is its not too big, you could plug it w peices of brick and then cement....

I think Alex is right, shouldn't be a problem. Be careful not to move the heating coils as they will be very brittle. Also, don't get any refractory clay or even brick dust on the coils as that could cause the coil to burn through at that spot ...

The hole is in the door and about the size of a quarter. Should be able to fill without effecting anything else. I ran it and it took about 45 mins to come up to 1500F. Do you think filling the old will effect the ramp up time? If not I may just leave it. Also I had it hold at 1500 for 10mins it cycles about 15 degs. I am using 1084 I know it does not need a soak time but is it best to let it soak a few mins after reaching 1500? If I put a knife to treat after reaching 1500 how long should I let it soak to make sure the steel reaches temp?

If it were me, I'd fill the hole to stop as much heat loss as possible. How much it affects ramp time I couldn't guess. I'm sure you could calculate it if you were so inclined. Every little bit helps...

I have a Scutt that has a hole in the top and the door. It came with two plugs that can be removed to view the inside of the oven.

Plug the hole. My Paragon doesn't have any holes but there is a gap around part of the door - I fill that with wool to seal the oven up as much as possible.
Leave the 1084 in the oven for a couple of minutes... |
