Use of leather belt
I just got my 2x72 leather belt.
Do you guys have any word of advise on how to use it? Compound, technique etc. Thanks, Alex |

Well, I've used mine with and without compound. It works well if you want to burnish metal or remove a wire edge when sharpening but I can't say that it works any better than other methods of polishing and sharpening. One thing I can say, I don't think a leather belt will be very useful unless you have variable speed or at least a very slow speed available.......

I do have variable speed KMG setup. Can run in reverse too.

Hi there. I use a leather strop for maintaining a razor edge on many of my knives and your belt with a red rouge compound will do the same thing with lett work. One thing I would saay is if you use a compound buy more belts. They dont clean as well as buffing wheels if you are using more than one compound. If you are using the belt for buffing consider leather pads for your lapwheel. I find a few of them with different compounds can speed up the polishing part. Another thing to consider with leatherr if you are willing to buy more of then is to check out a lapidary supply for some silica carbide and aluminium carbide to lather up some belts or pads on your lapwheel and you will save a lot of money on 400 grit and up sandpaper and belts. What I done with some pads on my lapwheel was place contact cement on the upside and then dump a liberal amound of silica carbide and rub it in with the glue tacky. After the glue is well cured for a few days mix some of teh leftover carbide with liqiud dishsoap and rub it into the grit that is glud on then start sanding and polishing with finer grits of silca carbide and aluminium carbides. You cant beleive how much time and money this saves in the long run and oh yes you can put some awsome polishes on some ugly rocks too.

Thanks for the tips. What is lapwheel exactly? Leather glued to a disk sander?

Basicaly yes. The fellows in the knife giuld call a large disk sander a lap wheel. It is also a term in lapidary for a sanding disk.

I may have to try one also, precision stropping without moving the knife!

Tru grit has them but the 2x72 they just got in are three inches too short. I tried to phone order one today and they said to try again in two weeks when the replacements come in. If you happen to have a 2x69 grinder then they should fit fine.
They are not listed on the site. Thanks Alex for letting me know where to get them. I found a few 1x30 & 42's on the internet but nothing for 2x72. |

I got this from another thread that Alex started about different belts, but this is the first place I saw leather belts at... was thinking of buying one. Don't know how they compare to tru-grit in price or quality though.
