Slip joint snaps closed nicking edge

My friend and I are starting to make slip joint folders. He's way ahead of me and has actually finished one which I think turned out great. One problem- at full open, half open and closed the spring is perfectly flush with the liners. The blade does not touch the spring when closed. But when the blade snaps closed it hits the "bulge" in the spring where the spring is pinned, putting a bad nick in the blade. In other words, the blade snaps shut causing the spring to move from neutral to positive, but it isn't a "nail breaker" it has a very gentle"walk and talk". How do you avoid the blade snapping beyond neutral as it snaps shut?

From the sounds of it the blade will have to be shortened in width, also if you can remove any of the pin area on the belly of the spring that might help. But, the way that I understand it is mainly that blade risacco/Kick area needsa little extra material. You probably will need to remake the blade and do the final fit-up after heat treat. Just make the tang kick and lock with a little extra material on it.
Hope that this helps.

yep either lengthen the kick, narrow the blade or narrow the bulge in the spring at the rocker pin, or you may have to do a combination of all of these to achieve a desireable result

Thanks for the advice. I think he'll write this one off to "lesson learned". His next knife, a texas toothpick, worked out fine. He left a little more space between the blade and the spring when closed.
