Just Getting Started
Howdy Folks,
Just as the title says I'm just getting started in the leather stuff. I'm also playing with Kydex. I'm not too far off from retiring with 30 years as a firefighter. I figured that I was going to need to find something to keep me busy. I won't be but 50 years old so I'm not quite ready for the rocking chair just yet. Hopefully y'all want mind me poking my head in from time to time (all the time) asking for help. One of my many hobbies is photography. If I can help out anyone with photography stuff just let me know. What do I have to do to be able to attach images? |

Hey man just jumping in from the newbies arena(I'm not usually in the leatherworking section). To post pics I believe you just have to comment on a few posts over a few days and you should be good to go. This might not be exactly right but I'm sure someone will correct me.

Howdy Firefighter, glad to hear you are taking up a great hobby and thanks for serving our US of A for 30 years!
I am an apprentice knife maker and recently took the plunge and bought all my leather tooling and crafting supplies and made my first sheath. I am basically hooked, and actually like the leather making more than the knife making. I also plan on doing the Kydex route for tactical knife sheaths and holsters, just have limited time since I am not retiring very soon. Same age though! Enjoy the new hobby and the retirement. I personally use Dropbox to link my pics to this forum. That way I just upload them and connect the link to a post, no fiddling with file sizes and is super easy. And all the pics come thru my Iphone so I always have knife porn to show off. Take care. Tony Z Kansas City, MO __________________ ABS Apprentice Bladesmith USMC Veteran VFW Life Member "Retreat? Several of us knifemakers here in Ga do our own leather work, but a lot more do not and are always looking for someone to make them. Go down to the GA Guild forum here on KNF and get the details on the next Guild meeting. You are more than welcome to come visit, bring your questions and projects, and see what the Guild is about. Lot of very talented members make for a tremendous network potential.
Hope you come for a visit. Also welcome to come up to Trackrock Hammer-in last weekend this month. You can meet my mentor to sheath making....Master Leather Craftsman Sandy Morrissey. Always a great resource of cow related info. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Again, thanks for the info. More importantly thank you for the warm reception! Before finding this forum I joined another and quickly realized that newbies were not really welcomed. I asked a "how to" question and only received two replies. Both of the replies were from someone trying to sell me something.
From what I've seen here on The Knife Network Forum it appears that there are a lot of people willing to help out by sharing their knowledge. |

Hey Scott, just wanted to offer another invitation to come to one of our Georgia Guild meetings. The spring event will be the middle of May in Alto/Lula at Scott Davidson's shop. Always a very good crowd. Several sheath/holster makers and knifemakers will be there. It's a free event (as always for visitors). Little bit of a ride for you but heck of a lot closer than Statesboro or Vienna.
The exact date will be posted on the Guild's forum a bit later. Let me know if you need further info. Also, if you are thinking about coming to the Blade Show in June, let me know, I may be able to wrangle you up a VIP pass or two (makes a huge difference in admissions). Either way I will be at my table 5-J in The Knifemakers' Guild section just right of the central entrance. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
