Good Grief: Miniatures!
I'm working on a miniature fighter with a Johnson handle and Loveless-style blade. OAL is 51/2", blade length is 3 1/8" and handle is 2 3/8". I have not worked this hard since the last Loveless-style Big Bear I made! Now "work" may not be the right word in this case, since this one isn't very heavy! However, grinding it on a 1.5" wheel is a challenge.....at this age! I literally had blurred vision and a headache when I quit. Using the "Optivisor" was very helpful, but it still went slow. I made 45 pearl-handled mini's for a set about 30 yrs. ago and they didn't seem to be so tough, but I had, perhaps, better sight and coordination then. It's going good, so far. The blade is ground after two days. I had to trim the diameter of the wheel down, since it was lop-sided and impossible to get a different grind with it. We'll see if I can get it polished tomorrow. It is going VERY SLOW. It took me at least two hrs. to grind the blade! I have the grinder going as slow as it will go - don't want to grind too much away by accident - can't use gloves and have been lucky enough that I haven't messed it up! Here's hoping it keeps going well. I can take "slow" much better than, "Hurry up and then fix things." So, tortoise-style it is, slow and easy! I'll keep reporting as we proceed. This is probably the last mini that I'll be making...... Here is a link to part of that set that I mentioned above: 8th photo down from the top of the page, http://www.srjknives.com/special.htm

Ok, the goal was to get it polished today, even though it was Sat. and I knew I'd be busy. Well, I was busy, but we made progress. There is not room for mistakes on these little ones and I did slip, once or twice. Takes a lot longer to repair a slip than to make one! You probably know that, huh? It is ready for the 1000x cork belt, now, at least. Took a few photos, maybe someday I'll learn to post pics on this forum. If I do, I'll put a couple up. Coming along fine, but it is slow and a bit of a challenge! lol ;>) All the time, Im thinking, "This is the last one.....this is the last one....." MAN, THIS IS FUN!

Buffing up the blade is a bit of a challenge, being careful to not blend grind lines and the centerline. AND....not getting caught in the buffer!
Next will be soldering the little guard in place. __________________ http://www.srjknives.com NRA Endowment Member Knifemakers' Guild Member since 1971 "May you live all the days of your life." - Jonathan Swift Last edited by Steve; 09-19-2012 at 02:08 PM. Reason: typo correction |

Steve,
I hope these are in the right order. 400 Grit. Note little 1 1/2" rubber tread wheel. Had to cut about 1/2 -3/4" off of the square steel arm, in order to make it possible to work on that little wheel! Bare hands were not a problem, as the pressure on the wheel was quite light and in order to get the control needed, I felt better without gloves. Gloves worked OK on the following, cork belts, as pressure was a lot more and heat from the belt was higher, also. 400 Grit Cork Belt. Belt is well worn-in. Of course, the 600x cork, or at present, the 1000x cork comes next. Buffing. Take great care! Making sure everything is as it should be. So far, so good..... __________________ Blade Show Table 19-K www.vestalknives.com http://www.customknifecollectorsassociation.com/ Last edited by Steve; 09-20-2012 at 02:04 AM. |

Round files are so handy.
A little file work and then on to sanding. Sanding the handle. First 120x, then 240x and belt polish tang. Getting there.....next make and install handle fasteners and thong tube. __________________ Blade Show Table 19-K www.vestalknives.com http://www.customknifecollectorsassociation.com/ Last edited by Steve; 09-21-2012 at 03:14 PM. Will do, Riccardo, as soon as I get time to learn the posting procedure that Charles has offered to teach me! Going nuts around here lately! We just welcomed our 2nd granddaughter, Emily Iris McKnight into the world and it's been fun but she's in SLC, so that took a few days out of our routine. Heck, maybe I can even post a photo of her!

Finally, with grandkids, holidays, etc., we (Our oldest boy, Rob, actually) got around to figuring out how to post these. Hope you like them! Thanks to the owner, who shot the pics for me, once the knife got to him in Michigan. Just couldn't' get the time to get ahold of my friend, charles Vestal, who offered to help me. I apologize and thank him for posting the many photos above and offering to help.
