New York Special Snaps

Hello Steve,

I was wondering if you used stainless steel snaps on the handle of the New York Specials you make.

After alot of searching I found a source for them and they seem to work well.

Take Care

I have never even seen a stainless snap. I'd love to get some for use on that model, they would be perfect for this application. I just made one out of 416 SS for a miniature, but it isn't really a snap, more of a button-type fastener, kind of like a "frog," like that used on an old bowie sheath.

I'll send you a few sets of the stainless snaps and you can see if you like them.

I found this address on your website, is this where you would like them sent.

Steven R. Johnson
P.O. Box 5
Manti UT 84642 USA

I have been using them on my fighter sheaths also, they are 300 series stainless and polish up real nice.

Here is where I found them.

I am finishing up a New York Special with Westinghouse antique gold Micarta and a matching Chute.

Hope you have a great Holiday weekend

Thank you very much, Charles. Can't wait to see them.
Yes, that is the correct mailing address.
I'm wondering if they are the large or smaller snaps?
Thanks again!

I'll try to get them in the mail tomorrow.

The part of the snap that will go on the New York Special handle is about 9/16" diameter.
Not sure if that would make them the large or smaller size.

Where did you get your Westinghouse antique gold Micarta? Would love to see a photo of it.

Hello Gilbert,

The customer supplied the Micarta. I'll see if I can get a photo taken and posted.

My snaps are the "baby" snaps, the female part is 3/8" diameter. That's the piece that is inlet into the handle slab of the New York Special.

Sorry to have gotten your hopes up Steve. You have some of the bigger ones coming your way.

I'll check with Sailrite to see if they can get some of the Baby snaps. Do you know what the company that makes your snaps call this size(do they call them baby snaps).

I think Bob Loveless called them "Baby Durables."

Hello Steve,

I contacted DOT Fasteners and they said the Baby Durables are not available in stainless

We could have a special run made, but the lady said we would have to order a min. of 30,000 sets. I don't think I will be making that many New York Specials.

I quess we hit a dead end on this one.

Take Care

Hey, that's only about 30 for every knifemaker on the planet! Oh well, the others have done fine for 30-40 yrs. Great idea, that would be the ultimate, wouldn't it? Thanks!

So would I Gilbert.

There was a block 1 3/8" x 1 1/4" x 5" on ebay that sold for $255 last week.

There is another for sale now, not sure what the high bid is.

Charles
