This knife cuts butter like it's .... butter :)
I made 2 of these and it was really fun mainly because of who they were for. I have two daughters 4 and 6 who are the best fans a knifemaker could ask for. They always ask to check out what I am doing and like to hold each knife before I sharpen it. I wanted to make something for them but I had a dilema as to what to do. My first thought was make a nice knife and save it for when they are older ..... but what's the fun in that. I wanted something they could use and then I realized a butter knife would be perfect. They both love their knives and they get to use them
![]() This is made out of O1 with a Juniper burl handle and fileworked spine. Well here it is, let me know what you think. Last edited by David Johansen; 05-24-2005 at 01:09 PM. |

Reminds me of the Nordic tradition of making "child knives" with blunt tips like that. They pop up on ebay once in awhile.

Thanks for all the comments everyone!!
McAhron and Hammerdownnow. Thanks but no can do, I'm afraid I would never have access to my shop again if I adopted the two of you....... I would learn a ton watching you two though ..... ![]() Rick, Thanks for the comments, that you think it was a cool idea means a lot to me. You come up with so many original ideas for your knives! I will come find you on Saturday. I can't wait to see some of your knives in person.....I hope you aren't sold out by then. ![]() Mt Mike thank you for the comments ... awe shucks Shane, Thanks that is what I am hoping. Julie, I think you are probably right. There has been several times the two of them on their own decided they were going to design some knives .... and then sat there for a good 45 minutes just drawing knives (all very similar but hey ![]() Rhrocker Thank you! I still can't get over how cool your last knife is. I am going to check it out at Blade. Can't wait!!! |

Nice idea, My 10 year old son has been at it for a couple years, just one here and there. I think he is on number 5? and now my 6 year old daughter wants to make her own. Nice idea, Sounds alot safer. Love the filework, it makes a beautiful combination.

Mmunds, Thanks I'm glad you like it! I'm glad you liked the filework as well. If your 6 year old makes one ..... will she grind it? I'm to afraid to let my 6 year old anywhere near a grinder. If she does make one you will have to let us see it.
olgoe, Thank you. And who knows when my hamming skills get up to par I may do just that ![]() |

She will grind her first one, as basic as possible and she wants to do a little neck knife. I let the kids use an old 1 inch belt grinder and worn belts to start (no sharp edge) and then help them learn to find the bevel. I hammer the tang down and put it in a stick for them to hold, keeps the hands back.
I do the buffer and drilling for them as to keep them safe, but they have to watch as I explain and have them tell me what they want. We have fun! I have them try to grind flat bevels half way up and then when they get close I have them convex the blade. That way they do not get frustrated matching them up and still get practice on it. I am doing my first vine filework right now, We'll see how it goes. I screwed up a blade's ricasso(hammered it to hard) So it is the perfect one to play with This is one of nicky's blades http://www.mundsknives.com/assets/images/nnknife1.jpg __________________ My only domestic quality is that I live in a house |
