History Channel
Tonight (Jan 21, 04) at 11:00pm on the History Channel is Axes, Knives, and Swords. Looks like it's going to be a good show.

This show has a small section devoted to sword making with Paul Champain (sp?). It shows a little of his process of starting with raw iron ore and taking it through the finished sword. I wish that they would have spent more time with him. Facinating!

Yeah, he was great! His name is spelled Champagne, BTW. The rest of the show was just OK but I got a real kick out of what he was doing ........

forgive the "I dunno" question...but...
What were the markings on the side of his anvil for? Looked like 1" increments and some selective "spots" The marks were pretty much in the center of the anvil Forging in ricasso??? __________________ Hank |

I suspect that thy are a ruler to measure his work, you will find a lot of smiths do that. Gib

I wondered about the marks too - had to be for some kind of measuring. Did anybody recognize that royal crown mark on the anvil? What brand is that?

Yeh I kinda figured the measuring as well. Just didn't know if there was some "ancient" practice or well kept secret,
on a way to lay out for ricasso or use the marks to work between point to back... ..sort of like a torque procedure. The thinking was working back and forth from mark in some type of hammer pattern... ...maybe making it more complicated than it needs to be.... ...or unlocking the secrets of THOR!!! cool __________________ Hank |

HI,
I put chalk marks on my anvil to use as a reference for bending and measuring where to do hot cutting and setting the ricasso. It is especially helpful for making duplicate pieces.
