Grandpa's knife - can you tell me about it

We received grandpa's old knife. From what I can make out on the knife, is that it's a legitimus collins & co. I believe the next line says hartford. Then the no. 17.

I'm more curious about the year of the knife and maybe any history. We aren't interested in selling. Just don't know much about it. Seems pretty banged up.
