Congrats to R.J. Martin
I would like to add to the congrats for RJ. Besides being a superb knife maker, he is also a great teacher and mentor to new makers like me. I posted a question a while back concerning heat treating D-2 steel when I switched from 0-1 to D-2 for my hunting knives. He not only took the time to answer my question, but gave me very detailed information, via several emails, that allowed me to improve on my knife steel. He is well deserving of his trade, and I will always hold him in high esteem. I can say that also for other great members of this forum that is willing to pass on their learning experience to us newbies. One of the reasons this web site is so great.
Thanks to all of you; RELH __________________ RELH |

Year old Thread
It's ok that this thread is a year old. There were very few posts and RJ deserves better than this.
I was interviewed by Blade Magazine regarding an article of tactical makers who build both folder and fixed blades. I listed RJ as the number maker on that list today. I took into account that he has built several different models of both folders and fixed blades over the last few years. That he has built several different styles and has used several different steels. These fixed blade styles included a Sub-Hilt FIghter, Fighter and Hollow Handle Survival Knife to name a few. A couple of makers that were mentioned to me by the writer made a few fixed blade models. However, they were very basic (no guards). Basically a piece of steel and two pieces of handle material. Most competent knife makers could do that. I also listed, Bob Lum, Bob Terzuola, Kit Carson and Walter Brend. Each of these world class makers build different models of fixed and folders. However, Lum, Terzuola and Carson focus primarly on Folders and Walter obviously is the master of the tactical fixed blade. There are others that will come up, but again they are usually folder makers who build a very baisc fixed blade. __________________ Les Robertson Custom Knife Entrepreneur Field Editor for Blade Magazine www.robertsoncustomcutlery.com |

I got to try out one of R.J.'s big fixed blades (not sure of the model name) over at Dan Farr's Place. That knife just cut rope forever - it actually made me look like I knew what I was doing. I was very impressed.
