Are you going to drill the pivot hole before HT or use a carbide drill after HT? Some makers use a machinist's straight lap to finish the pivot hole after heat treating. I almost always use air hardening steels and quench the blade between heavy steel plates to prevent warpage. That way, the pre-drilled pivot hole remains square to the flats after HT. |

Semi finishing the blades
I've sawed the extra ends off past the points.
Five minutes on a belt grinder with a 50 grit blue Norzon gives me two blades profiled to the patterns. |

Can't stress enough the importance of deburring and sanding flat after any machining operation.
I'm using a 220 grit wet or dry automotive body shop paper. |

Lining up with the centerline of the pattern and drilling the #41 pivot holes in both blades.
Now what do we do after drilling the first hole before drilling the next hole??? Your turn!!! |

Scribing two lines that are 0.030" apart on the C/L of the blades. Scribe one, turn the blades over, scribe the second line.
Now I'll use these lines to blend in the blade tips with the rest and grind the flats until I'm satisfied. I'll concentrate on moving the grind line up toward the spine without removing metal from the edge. That is, as well as this old man can do it. |

Great WIP Don!!! Very clever to cut "twins blades"!!!.....I was thinking of making some kind of fixture to hold the blades while grinding but this way is simply genius!!!........ |

Again, always deburr after any machining operation. Thanks for the reply. |

I have my blades finish ground on the belt sander and almost ready for heat treating. Photos later. I need to lie down and rest my back for awhile.
Has anyone else started on your knives? I realize most or all of you have to go to work on a regular job, but keep up as well as you can. After I get the tangs of my blades ready for HT I'll start on making liners with spot welded bolsters. Then I'll put the first folder together. |

Great, Ted. Don't forget your pin stock must be the same alloy as your bolsters.
It's disappointing to finish up a nice folder, then find out the color of the pins is different than the bolsters. You won't know that until the final finishing. Believe me, I know. Most pin and bar stock is color coded with paint on one end. Don't mix them up. Keep the colors together and if you cut off a piece, cut it from the non-painted end. |

Don, Just got my blades profiled and ground, I use a burr-king and free hand grind after I mark both the edges .015 off center. Since I'm using 01, I'm going to heat treat in oil and temper in a toaster oven at 350 for 1 hour x 2.
Are there any problems that I need to know about before starting on the liners, while the blades are tempering ? BB |
