Heat Treating 0-1

Hello Everyone,

Thanks to all of your help in the past, I'm in the process of creating my first stock removal knife! I finished profiling it last night and still need to square up the edges and such and hand sand it. I still have a while to go but my question is:

Where may I find a heat treating service for my 0-1 blade?

O-1 is very easy to heat treat yourself with minimal equipment like a propane torch, magnet, and vegetable oil, oh and a toaster oven or plain ole kitchen oven for tempering if you would like to give it a try, i`ll post the instruction on how I do it. 95 percent of my knives are O-1.

Is 0-1 so simple to heat treat that no one really offers the service?

To throw in my two-cents here, most of the carbon steels are fairly easy to heat treat but not in batches. I get the best results when I handle them one at a time which commercial processors don't like to do. Also, some steels quench in oil, some in water, and some require the quenchant to be at a specific temperature so it's not easy for a commercial processor to be set up for all the possibilities especially when most knifemakers do it themselves.

Further, you get the best performance from a carbon blade when you either edge quench it or draw the temper on the back of the blade. That's a one blade at a time deal too...

Actually i would be interested in this process also. I am working on my first knife (O-1). I had just planned on sending my blade to a knife supply house for the treatment, but if i can do the same thing at home i would prefer to do it myself.
