The right back ground music is extremly important!

I use chalk when I'm doing layout on leather, it just rubs off. I'd also hasten to add that your first knife looks miles better than my first one.

I'm glad to see that you had some willing mentors to help you on your way, I hope you do more in the future.

In regards to your question regarding Cypress take a look at the following:

Use a red pencil to mark your leather. The leather stain will blend it in and it will disappear. Chuck Burrows uses a red "unibal" pen, I just use a red color pencil. If you mark tight and cut the center of your mark it won't matter. Dad (Sandy Morrissey) uses a regular ball point pen. But both these guys are pros with leather. There are a bunch of "Stickies" in the Sheath/Holster Forum section here in KNF, with lots of helpful tricks for the leather end of things. Fresh leather is like a sponge, it will pick up any mark, stain, dust/dirt from unclean hands, etc. One of the reasons you see so many black sheaths....the ultimate coverall.
Nice work Hondo (good thing you didn't try to burn the thread off......)

That looks very good for a first knife....on the sheath....i usually mark my sheath out in pen on the rough side and sand it
down to the lines....that way you have no marks to stain over..

hondo76, It's super cool that you stuck to your goal, it says a lot about you. The concept of what your doing is priceless. I enjoyed watching your updates, and hope your Grandpa understands how much of yourself went into this knife. Now, w/ all this great advice you received I can't wait to see your next knife.
