Some pictures not showing up.

The thumbnails people are posting arn't coming up at all. None of Buddy Thomason's pictures show up for me.

I'm using windows xp pro and home on two computers. Both have the google tool bar pop up blocker, but I should hear a click when it blocks something.

Security settings are on custom/medium. Accepting all cookies. Advanced settings are set at default.

I have a router and firewall.

Could it be some plug in or active x thingy that I am missing?

Clueless

Lane

I wouldn't think that the Google toolbar would have anything to do with it, but then again I don't know much about it. Using Firefox negates the need for pop-up blockers and such. I do know that I have a plug-in for Firefox that allows me to block images from a certain domain. I don't know if the Google toolbar has this ability, but maybe it thinks the images are ads?

Strange problem you've got going on there. If you click on one of the missing thumbnails, does the full-size image show up?

Try clearing all or at least the TKN cookies, your cache, etc and then re log in. When I have those kinds of problems this often fixes it......I'd clear cache first and then do cookies - you may be pulling up the cached page over and over again with the bad images/links. Also if using IE do a "hard" refresh - hold the Ctrl key down and while holding down click on refresh - do this AFTER clearing your cache which you do by selecting Tools, Internet Options, Delete Files, Delete all offline content, OK

Buddy uses a thumbnail link to a larger image. Your browser may be configured to consider this as a 'pop-up' and eliminate it accordingly. You aren't the first I have heard about the thumbnail links not working.

It has nothing to do with the post or the photo host.

I want to know the answer also.

I'm using Firefox as well, and have pop-up blocking turned on, but I see the thumbnails. That's strange, and bears more investigation.

If I only had the time...

Okay, this is interesting!

I have been able to duplicate the problem. I can see what is happening, but have not found a fix. The thing that makes this so interesting to me is that the thumbnails do show in FireFox, and in Maxthon (a tabbed browser/shell that uses the IE rendering engine), but NOT in Internet Explorer.

Here's a screenshot of one of Buddy's posts with a thumbnail which links to a larger version of the same image:

From Maxthon ( a tabbed browser/shell that uses the IE rendering engine )

Now for the perplexing part. As stated above, Maxthon uses the Internet Explorer rendering engine, and as you can see the thumbnail is visible. Also as mentioned previously the thumbnail works for me in FireFox. But here is a shot of the post in Internet Explorer:

From Internet Explorer

You don't get the broken link symbol. Instead you get nothing -- as if the code is being completely ignored.

Research
The first thing I did was delete all temporary internet files including locally stored offline content (IE). Next I manually deleted my KnifeNetwork cookie. When I logged back in (IE) the thumbnail still was not visible. Of course it still worked in Firefox and Maxthon.

Next I checked the actual code being passed to the browsers. This is where I found something else that is quite interesting. First let me mention that the forum software is not using anything like ActiveX or Javascript popups to perform the display of the thumbnails or the subsequent new window/tab to the larger image. It uses plain vanilla HTML for an image link.

Here's the code passed to Maxthon and Firefox:

HTML Code:
<a href="http://www.fototime.com/2D3C0ABD4B8A78D/orig.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.fototime.com/2D3C0ABD4B8A78D/thumbnail.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a>
That's pretty much what you would expect see. Now here's what Internet Explorer is picking up (for me), and I assume that this is the same situation for Lane Ritter and his FireFox browser.

HTML Code:
<a href="http://www.fototime.com/2D3C0ABD4B8A78D/orig.jpg" target="_blank"> </a>
The code for the link is fine, but notice that there's no code to display the thumbnail. So we've got a link with nothing to click on. Where the code should be, is a string of spaces.

That's odd. Since vBulletin is written in PHP, and PHP serves up a stream of static HTML that is generated from information on the server, I don't see any reason why there wouldn't be an image tag inside the link. It obviously is being sent from the server, but IE is ignoring it.

My initial thought was that it had something to do with the vBulletin code that Buddy was using to create the thumbnail link. I have noticed that some folks who are new to vBulletin, but have some HTML experience, tend to try to post images using regular HTML img tags. What's interesting is that some folks can see the images (those on IE, usually) whereas I can't (on Firefox). So my first thought was that it was a vB code issue.

Sounds like that's not the case.

I really wish I had the time to explore this, because it's an interesting problem from a technology standpoint, but I'm off to my parent's place in about 30 minutes, and will be on dial-up (kill me now) for the remainder of the weekend.

So, in my absence, I'll just bow to your geekness!

I'm using internet explorer 6.0. I am using zonealarm pro firwall, and this is what is keeping the thumbnails from showing up. I turn off my firewall, the thumbnails show up. So I have to figure out what to change in the firewall.

My apologies Lane. I now see that it was John Costa using Firefox, and not you. You have the same situation as me. I suspect John does too.

I suspected a firewall setting when I first read your post, but I got confused when I started experimenting and found that the thumbnail image links worked for me on everything but Internet Explorer. Seems to me that a firewall setting would cause the image links not to work in any of my browsers.

Wonder if John is using ZoneAlarm Pro? I'm using EZ-Firewall by Computer Associates, but I'm almost certain that it is in fact based on ZoneAlarm Pro. It looks almost identical and works the same way.

Like Jamie, I want to dig into this, but I'm tied up with the business. I've gotta get those knives out so I can pay the next round of bills.

I figured it out. It's the firewall.

In EZ-Firewall, and I assume ZoneAlarm Pro, under the Program Control tab you can set various options for programs on your machine that access (or try to access) the Internet.

To edit/change these options you highlight one of the programs in the list and either right-click and select "options", or highlight the program and click the "options" button at the bottom of the tab.

Here's what I found out on mine. Under the options dialog box there is a section labeled Filter Options. The only option there is "Enable Privacy for this program". In my case Privacy was enabled for Internet Explorer, but not for Firefox or Maxthon. With Privacy enabled, the firewall is interpreting all the thumbnail image links as a popup ad, and it's blocking them.

The quick fix if you can call it that is to disable the Privacy option for the browser program. That's fine for me because I control Privacy with respect to cookies, banners, and popups from within each browser. I just went ahead and disabled Privacy for Internet Explorer in the firewall.

If you are hesitant to do this, there is another way that adds one step to the viewing of the thumbnail image links. Here's how it works in EZ-Firewall, and I assume ZoneAlarm Pro.

Go to the Privacy tab. Under the Ad Blocking section click the "Custom" button. This pops up the Custom Privacy Settings box. Under the section labeled "Ad Void Control" select the option that fills the void from the blocked ad with a box that you can mouse over to get the ad to appear.

What this does is replace the void with a box that contains "[ AD ]". That let's you know that there's something there. If you hold the mouse cursor over the "[ AD ]" box, the thumbnail image will appear and you can then optionally click on it to load the larger image.

That fixed it. Thanks for figuring it out, I never would have been able to.

None of the banners were showing up either, having never seen them I had no idea. I still can't see them but the Add button, atleast lets me know one is there.

Lane
