Your thoughts on a DVD burner??

I'm considering a DVD Burner for my computer and would like your input on what I think might be a good choice...... My intent is to use it to "back-up" our DVD movies, and also use it as a hard copy back-up for my knife records. I'm still a bit fuzzy on all the DVD burner lingo, but from what I can gather, for price and features, this might be a good model....
DVD Burner

Your thoughts?

Ed,

Get a combo dvd/cd burner/reader. They're cheap now for what they can do. Get the fastest you can for the dollar. The prices are based mostly on speed of the drive. Also, you can't go wrong with a brand name when it comes to support.

Ed, I have a combo burner like Alex mentioned and it works great for mass storage and for backing up those DVD's :-). Ive had a blast with mine. A good program for burning DVD's is X COPY. I bought the full a blown gold version and really only needed the X Copy XPRESS. Makes backing up DVD's very easy.

If you haven't copied a DVD before, you're in for a rude awakening. XCopy used to do a really good job of copying, but "The Man" forced them to change their software.

DVD movies are often (usually?) double-sided, while DVD writers - and DVD blanks - are single sided. Then, there are at least 4 different formats - and the blanks have to be the right format as well. CDs are easy. DVDs take some study.

The prices are down to where it's a good piece of equipment to have. Be prepared for some reading!

I've seen the term "combo" drive, but am not exactly sure what it refers to. I assume it is a drive that not only handle DVDs, but is also a CD-rom, and a CD-writer too? I recently purchased a BenQ DVD-rom from a local outfit, and have been pretty pleased with it's performance. That's one of the reasons I was looking at the model mentioned in my first post.
I am finding that there does seem to be much more to burning DVDs than CDs. Maybe one of these days I'll get a firm grasp on all of this technology............

Ed, it's one of those thing where if you think you understand, then you're confused. But if you feel confused, then you understand.

Cool

The free version of DeepBurner might be handy for some of you:

Whilst the below isn?t the best solution, it is a lovely simple solution for backing up DVD. An XviD codec will work well.
