website builder software recommendation

I am going to build myself another website and am looking for recommendatios as to which software is both relatively easy to use and will give good results. I have built my currrent website using the "Coffee Cup" software so am not a complete novice but neither am I a programmer. I know that the best answer would be to geet Alex to designand build it but I would prefer to do it on my own. Thanks for the help.

Hi Steve,

I built my entire website on my own with a starter template ($85) and a $15 shareware HTML editor (Smultron). Click my banner link to see for yourself.

Like building a kit knife. All the hard work was already done for cheap.

Jim
Sorry to keep you hanging. I took a good look at the allweb templates and purchased one. I am in the process of turning it into my website. I should hope it will be up in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the recommendation. I did not know they had such things as templates for websites.
Thanks
Steve

Steve - You're going to love it (or hate it)

Coop turned me onto them as well. You'll love it because the do make it fairly simple to work with. You may hate it because the give you so many options and ways of doing stuff that your head will spin. The great thing about them is that the end result will not have the "template" feel. You can truly make it your own.

Note: You can do a ton of editing in Notepad but having some sort of HTML editor will help a bunch when trying to see what it will look like online. If you don't have MS Frontpage or Macromedia Dreamweaver, use Netscape Composer - it's free and it works pretty well.
I'm no computer whiz, but after revamping my website for two weeks I'm getting to know Allwebco stuff and common HTML fairly well - so if I can help in any way just let me know.

BTW - my "new" site should be up in a few days. I just have to get with my host for assistance uploading it all. Lucky he's a buddy of mine.

If you have a Mac, I recommend this simple program: Smultron

it has an HTML editing window on one pane and a WYSIWYG display for your changes on the other. Works as you change so it's easy to see your 'look'.

Worth the donation of $10 or so.

Glad to hear of your guys successes. I learned a helluva lot, but it sure made things relatively easy.

After I was done, I asked and had a number of folks offer suggestions. Many were within my grasp and made sense. (My original text was all in smaller case bold. One fellow mentioned to me to lose the bold and increase the text size. Once I found the control for that on the CSS page it was a 1 minute job that made the entire site easier to read.)

HTML can be edited with Notepad. You can view the pages you create by opening the file in your browser (i.e. Internet Exporer use File:Open from the menu) If you open two windows on the screen you can edit in one and see the results in the other (hit "Refresh"). I did this for years on some large sites when I first started. You can also "borrow" code from other pages by copying snippets from the "view source" feature. It is a good place to learn, too. This will work fine for simple stuff. Be aware that the technology is advancing and many dynamic features will not run this way.

The whole process has been delayed due to a death in the family but I should have the new website up in about a week. I am using Coffee Cup HTML editor and liking it very much.

Stteve,

I tried Web Studio 4.0 for a free trial and bought it after a day of tryout. It was cheaper then, maybe 5 years ago and about half of what it goes for now. I have no expereience with anything else.

Steve I realy like your website, would like to build something like it.

I had a guy build mine and I don't know what's going on with him, but I'm not too happy with it rite now. Thinking of doing the whole thing myself but don't know where to start.

Take a look at the allwebco website. It is fairly user friendly but it does help if you have some idea what to do with a website. They do have a very active help forums. It took me about 30 hours to get mine where I wanted it but I did get one of the more complicated ones. Hope that helps
