Working on ebook

I am working on a knife/blacksmith ebook PDF using Adobe CS2 and it converts to a PDF easily. Use Avery software for CD lables. When a CD is burned and it is opened a file appears which can be opened for the PDF document.

Is there software available that would auto open the CD and have a index page with buttons or graphics that can be used to navigate to various parts of the document?

I know enough about computers to get me into trouble but am having fun.

Thanks

Gene Chapman

Hi Gene,

Don't know about the auto open, but Adobe Acrobat can set up an index bar, and you can also make links from one page to another - you should be able to set up button-style links on an index page, for example.

CS2 can also make a table of contents with links to each page. For an example of that, you can download a free eBook I made about netsuke carving techniques and see this in action here: http://www.sterlingsculptures.com/Re...ng_Netsuke.htm

It's about 20 megabytes, so I hope you're not on a soda-straw connection!

Tom, thanks looked over your website, great work. Have dsl here and will look at the carving pages tonight. I used Pagemaker 6.5 for yours then got CS2 as the print shop I use advised it. It's more complicated than 6.5 and I 'm not getting any younger.

Coupville, thats across the sound from Kingston.

Thanks again

Edit: Super tutorial on the ladybugs, will show my wife, she is a wood carver.

Hi Gene,

I have a CD with the preview plans for a homebuilt airplane, and all of the chapters are PDF's. When I insert the CD, it autoplays and opens Internet Explorer (or Firefox) to an HTML page located on the CD. The HTML contains links to the PDFs on the CD.

I'll see if I can locate the disc tomorrow (I'm 99% sure it's in my office) and tell you what special files are on the CD and how the HTML page is constructed.

Thanks Jamey, looking forward to seeing it. I only use a small percentage of Photoshop and Pagemaker capabilties and now with CS2 spend a lot of time looking up stuff in the book. Got so I keep small notes on a clipboard so I don't have to look the same one up a month later, it's an age deal

Tom, just viewed the netsuke tutorial, it's incredible.

Thanks for the kind words, Gene! Hope it's of help, and maybe your wife gets a few grins out of it too.

OK, here's what's on the CD...

start.exe is simply a Windows file. I can zip it up and email it to you. PM me your email address.

AUTORUN.INF is simply a text file (no .txt extension, use the .INF extension) containing:

PHP Code:
[autorun]
open=start /m Preview.htm
And the code for the HTML page is:

PHP Code:
<html>
<
head>
<
title>Preview Manual set introduction</title>
<
meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

</
body>
</
html
When you click on the start button, it takes you to the menu page, which looks like this:

PHP Code:
<html>

<

The menu page is in the PDF FILES folder, so it can reference the PDF files directly with no path.

Hope this helps.

Jamey,

oakniron@centurytel.net

Not real sure what all that means but have a son in law who makes his living as a computer tech and sure he can help, and maybe I'll learn too.

Thanks a lot,

Gene

The file is on its way, Gene.

If you need me to help out here, I'll be happy to. I'm pretty busy, but if you send me the files on CD, I can create something similar to the CD I have. Your son-in-law should be able to figure it out though. If he can't, just send me the files, and how you want the contents page structure to look, and I'll give it a shot.

Gene,

Just a caution - the autorun file will only work on a Windows computer (and I assume Vista, but I have no real knowledge about this newest OS). It won't work on Macintosh or Unix/Linux machines, so I wouldn't depend on just the auto start up part - I'd include instructions about what file to double-click on to get to the good stuff for these other computers systems.

I've learned to always assume your users are complete computer novices - you'll usually be right; the experienced users won't be offended, and the novice won't be left out in the cold...
