Any Ideas???
Greetings All,
I aquired this dagger recently, and was hoping someone here might be able to give me some info on it. The blade is a Gerb. Becker Solingen with the Chef maker mark inside a triangle, I had to use a jeweler's loupe to confirm the mark, so a photo was not possible with my camera. The reverse of the blade is marked, Stainless, Germany. The hilt and sheath are metal, which appears to be brass with a gold wash. Some work was put into its design, because the sheath is lined with wood, and the rounded portion of the blade acts as a habaki on a japanese sword to keep the body free floating. The reliefs appear to be either Greek or Roman Gods and Goddesses. The gold wash is worn and it appears to have some age on it, I've read that stainless steel started being used in the early 1900's, so I'm guessing its no more than 50 or 60 years old. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance, Mark

Compare your mark to this one. It should say gebr, not gerb.
 Could be made before the war. Sheffield started making stainless cutlery in 1919. Can't tell if it was made during the war. Gebr-Becker had no RZM code assigned to them. Many were made after the war to capitize on the souvenir craze along with millions of fakes. This one has the look of a tourist trade letter opener from the pics. Not sure at all tho, and it might be worth getting professionaly appraised. Its the not knowing for sure if I'm sitting on a gold mind that drives me nuts.

It is Gebr. Becker, my bad, I typed it wrong. I thought about a letter opener, except for the care taken in the sheath, and the VERY sharp point. I've never seen a letter opener with a point this sharp, and the edge shows no signs of "after market" sharpening.

me personal i would say you've got a nice letter opener. it just does'nt look as if it'd ever be used as a weapon
