Full tang flattening, by hand
Does anyone have any trick as to how to make a full tang knife trully flat? When I draw file, I have a tendency to "dish" some areas. I have thought of using a large grit sandpaper, affixed to a piece of glass, and run the knife on it. Any other idea? Thanks, JD |

I use the platen on my grinder to get really close and them go to a 1/4" thick piece of tempered glass with paper taped to it. Use a marker to scribble on the tang and then sand, the markes will be removed from the high spots showing that you are not flat yet. When minimal sanding removes ALL of the markings, you are done. |

That would take a long time, though I'm sure you'd get it flat. This works for me, but it's not "...by hand," as you call it. Good luck.. pub42.ezboard.com/fcustom...=114.topic |

well..theirs always the railroad track...(jus kiddin!) leather shims...about the size of a dollar bill...cut out of old belt....... put one about an inch either side of the bend and whack it good with short handled sledge... the thickness of the leather will dictate the extent of the bend...not too much now...this method allows you to whack exactly at the hi point of the bend...hope that helps.. |
