forging vanadium

Has anybody tried forging pure vanadium? I know it will be tough, but is it red short? Then, of course, if I can forge it, how do I heat treat it?

Thanks,

Gene

Pure vanadium is soft and ductile so you could always work then anneal .I don't know anything about forging it. Other than annealing you wouldn't be able to heat treat it as far as I know as it has only one crystal structure.

You'll need to tell us why you would want to do such a thing before we can help you a whole lot.

I received a query about forging a machete from a piece of solid vanadium that has sentimental family value. I told the client that I first had to see whether it can be done. I'll usually try anything once, but I like to know just what I'm biting off before I get in over my head. I may not learn fast but I do learn.

BTW, it's in round bar at present.

Be careful what you do with it, Gene. Under the wrong circumstances, you may only get one chance to ever work vanadium. Research vanadium inhalation toxicity well before you proceed.

Aftyer researching vanadium toxicity, and the fact that I have diabetes, I've decided that I'd have to be an idiot to do this project.

Thanks for all the info. Whether it can be done is less important than whether I will live through the process.
