"rolling" Kydex

I've been making both Kydex and Leather sheaths for my knives (yes, I'm a knifemaking dilettante) and I want to improve my kydex as well as my leatherwork.

Anywho -- how do you kydex gurus "roll" the lips of your sheaths? I've done a few, but I'm not getting consistent, even results. I'd like to get the opening to curl out slighty so the handle doesn't catch at all.

Thanks in advance!

Thumbs up

That's a very good question, Burch. I'd like to see some answers myself.

As for how I do it, I finish molding the sheath to the knife, then reheat the lip area a little bit and curl it with my gloved fingers. I use cotton gloves so I can hold the llip up until it cools enough to hold the shape.

I usually wrap the handle of the knife in aluminum foil so the heat won't bother it and do this with the knife in the sheath, so it doesn't disturb the locking action.

Let's hear some more ideas.

I've don as Don and molded the sheath to the knife first. The only difference is I then heated the edge and used a wooden dowel to create the "curl".

Let's hear some other ideas!

I wear Nomex gloves and do the whole thing when the knife and sheath goes into the press. I`ve never done it any other way than by hand. It`s mostly experience. Just go with what works for you, trash what don`t. I don`t like to reheat any part of a sheath. It takes too much time and I`ve been known to screw-up more than I fix,

Hey Guys....

The forming of the mouth is done by hand, usually...
This is done after the sheath is molded, and in the final fit and finish stage....

Each knife is differnt,,some need it,,some don't, some need to be played with to get just right...

All depends on the knife....

I roll the edges at the mouth of the sheath by flashing a lighter flame past the edges a couple of times, then running a dowel on the inside to flare it outwards. You only need a few passes with the lighter. Too much and the heat will deform too large an area or scorch and burn the edge of the Kydex. Experience helps I suppose. Jason.
