Snake Skins for Inserts?

I'm really a newbie when it comes to making sheaths, but I've admired a lot of the ones posted on this forum, especially those with inserts. I wouldn't mind trying my hand at inserts rather than doing just the simple pouch sheaths I usually make for my knives.

In my area (Alberta, Canada), Tandy Leather is offering a "Blowout Sale" on cobra skins ($19.99 each) and colored python skins ($99.99 each). Anyone know if the skins carried by Tandy are good enough quality to be used in sheaths?

Jim

Hi Jim,

we have a cobra skin at the shop, but haven't used it yet. It looks like it would work very well. The ones we have used the most are rattlesnakes and stingray.

At 20 bucks you're getting a deal (in Canada anyways)

Another option for you would be fish skins, carp, salmon etc.. from this website in Calgary

Have fun, Moe.

Hey thanks, Moe!

Tandy Leather also has a sale on ray skins for $19.99 each. I know those skins are often used for the handles (tsuka) of katanas. I just might have to pick up a few pieces of various snake and ray skins for future projects.

Didn't realize there was someone in Calgary selling fish skins. That's a great idea. Thanks for the link!

I would suggest that you get "Custom Knife Sheaths with Chuck Burrows" it has a lot of good info on sheath making. It also has a section on doing enlays. Well worth the money. It's saved me a lot of headaches and mistakes.

JimT, I would also recommend that you take a look at Paul Long's "Advanced Blade Sheaths". He does and outstanding job of showing how to do inlay. his work is over the top. Trav

One other thing to consider with snake skin inlays. If your supplier for the snake skins says that he cannot ship out of country, you probably won't be able to ship the finished sheath with that material in it either. It would rarely come up but something to consider with a sale outside the U.S.

Thanks Doug. You make a good point, one I hadn't considered. I ended up buying a cobra skin from Tandy. I didn't bother with the stingray skins since they were all dyed in really gaudy patterns and colors. Almost looked fake.

The cobra skin is fairly thin, so I'm guessing I'll end up gluing to a piece of leather (maybe 4-5 oz) for reinforcement before turning it into an insert on a sheath. I just want to make sure I have a really good idea of how it's done before I begin.
