First Knife

The knife is my first attempt. It is supposed to be a Chinese chopping knife. Steel is from a circular saw blade. It was edge quenched in vegetable oil after heating to nonmagnetic in coal fire. Handle is American black walnut.

I thought i would work on utility type knives as i gain some experience.

Nice finish on the handle. What did you use?

Finish

Don
I used several coats of Minwax Wiping Polly. I wetsanded (with the polly) the first couple of coats, wiping off the excess before it got to tacky.

I don't think it would be durable enough for a working knife. Will be looking at some form of stabilization on my next attempt.
Thanks
Gary

I wish my first attempt had looked that good! I think you have a fine using knife there regardless of your handle concerns.

BTW, I would be interested in getting some of that Lignum Vitae from you and answered your other post but you don't show an email address. Mine is fountainman@hotmail.com

Thanks,

Peter Atwood

Great chopper! Looks like a real work horse.

I wouldn't wory about the handle to much, heck, look at Old Hickory knives, they have an untreated hickory handle. Just keep it out of the dishwasher and it should give you years of service. I still have a couple of kitchen knives I made my mother back in high school treated with polyurithane that have held up well.
