I also like using the stones. Right now I use them right after the belt grinder and then go to paper. I only have up to 220 stones and have been thinking about getting finer. I think Steve may have inspired me to pick some up. Andy, you should be able to even get them locally at industrial supply stores. The ones around here have a full selection in stock.

Here is a preview to the start of my build. I am going to try to channel a old family friend who passed away a while back. He was a Great knifemaker perhaps a legend some may know him and recognize the pattern.

Anyway this is just the cutout, still have to do some milling before I cut out the main shape. Will keep you guys posted....Oh its CPM154 Steel

Well, here is today's progress. I ran into a few order of operations issues and am still struggling with wether or not to put the whole thing together and then finish or to finish most of the pieces first then put it together. Anyhow, it is coming together.

SO here is a preview for my Hidden tang build. I have wanted to try to replicate a popular knife from a longtime family friend who passed away. He was a great knifemaker, some of you may know him "el lobo solo" was his brand...

This is just a cutout still have to do some milling and surface grinding. Just didnt have time today.

Here is the link for the company I bought the stones from http://www.mold-and-die-tech.com/ .
I hope that works.

No I don't plan on welding the two together but I will fill the handle with epoxy which should make it a very solid connection.

To Ray and all the KITH participants
I am going to have to bow out of this one. My bright idea for the keyhole tang would probably work very well for a solid body handle but it doesn't work for the leather stack. I have nearly finished the knife and was testing it out when I realized that there was movement inside the handle where the tang meets the threaded rod. It would be fine as a wall hanger but there is no way I would put my name on it and if I won't put my name on it than it really can't go out as a KITH knife. Unfortunately I simply do not have the time to start over. So thanks to all that commented and for the lessons learned. I will keep my ears open for the next KITH and hopefully will be allowed to participate.
Thanks
Steve

Steve,

The KITH is for stick tangs, the stacked leather is optional. If you want to finish out your knife with a solid handle that will work just fine. Remember too that the KITH runs until Thanksgiving so there's still at least 11 weeks to go ....

Well then, enjoy your holiday and then get back to work on your KITH knife because you'll still have 5 more weeks after YOUR Thanksgiving to get it done ....

I agree with Ray, take the leather off and do wood, it's to nice and you've done to much work on it to quit now.

I haven't even started on mine yet! It's to hot in Texas right now.

You might come back and silver braze the threaded section on. Use leather as spacers. That would salvage that piece and give the handle much needed rigidity. One of the challenges to using a stacked leather handle is the leather offers little strength so it's a good idea to over build the tang. I'm still mulling over a design. I'll get to it after the end of the month.

so on Monday I spent some time in the shop and committed to this project. here's my progress so far. I have 'Great Expectations' for this one, and I'm very excited.

Thanks for Looking, and comments welcome.

(Steve, I hope you find the time to complete that one and stay in this KITH, I'm excited to see what you end up with!)

Alex

Looking good Alex. That heavy tang will work well with the leather. You might want to give a little radius at the transition points where the tang meets the recasso to keep from having a stress riser when you heat treat it.
