For me it started out Primarily for it's wear resistance, and for it's precision flatness, and edging capabilites for plunges. Then others noticed that it generated less heat, which made for lengthened belt and bearing life. Pretty good bang for the buck.

Ground my first (D-2) blades this morning using the pyroceram platen. Cannot believe how much easier it is, not only to grind square shoulders, but just overall. Definitely saves on belt wear, too. glad I bought two

I got mine today and it was waving...waving hello to its new home Looks great and epoxy is drying as we speak. I did take a 220 ish belt and nock the edges off that contact the belt though. I thought I read to do that.

Thanks again !

Dave

cool

Yes, this material is nothing short of amazing as to the difference it can make in the quality of one's work, and it does help to knock the sharp edges off of the liner...with a grinder, just as Dave did. Thanks for the update, guys.

Just read through the forum, but I realize that it has been awhile since the first post.. so I'll check to make sure prices are still good from first post and that availablity is still good to go before I order.

Hi,

I just purchased a KMG and would also like to line the platen with ceramic.

I have a question though. Should not the ceramic (and the platten for that matter) be somewhat narrower than the belt width so that the belt would roll-off on the sides of the platten (or ceramic) so that one could achieve a bit of radius in the grind, say near where the knife edge starts at the guard?

Should not the width of the ceramic therefore be about 1 3/4" wide to allow the 2" belt to overlap the platten by 1/8" on either side?

Thanks for the replies.

Mario

Platen width.

I would think it best to have the platen and liner the same width as the belt, and dift the belt as much as needed for the desired effect. You can also round the edges of the liner to suit your particular style, but I believe it best for the belt and liner to be the same width.
